Dull Boy by Sarah Cross
"What do you do if you can deadlift a car, and you spend your nights flying to get away from it all? If you're fifteen-year-old Avery Pirzwick, you keep that information to yourself. When you're a former jock turned freak, you can't afford to let the secret slip.I loved Cross's description of flying. The only things I've read with flying (without wings) are comic books, and there isn't much (actually, any) room describing the act of flying there.
Nicholas and Catherine were my favorite characters (and Avery). Nicholas's powers were really interesting. He reminded me of Chamber (only in reverse) from the arc of Runaways with the Loners. I can't decide how I feel about what they learned about his powers in the end.

B1.1's New Title and My Pen Name
First, I've changed the working title. I have another title for it, but I don't really want to post it online because I'm paranoid and afraid some not-so-nice writer will find my blog and steal my brilliant title. Anyway, the new working title is...
*drumroll*
Not Another Vampire Book!
I know, I know, it's not that creative or anything, but it works, and that's all I need it to do. Here's the synopsis I wrote for NaNo:
Short, sweet, and to the point (without giving too much away). ^_^
I have an idea for a cover, and I'm gonna see if Zombie Girrrl will draw it for me (because I can't really draw).
On to the second bit of news. I have a new pen name! Yay! Whoo!
What is it, you ask? It is Frankie Barlow. There's a little story behind the name Frankie, but I don't feel like going into it right now. However, I will tell you where I got the last name, because the story is much shorter: I got it from Leviathan. I liked the sound of it, so I thought, Why not? I need a last name, and this one is rather nice.
So, what do you think? Not Another Vampire Book by Frankie Barlow. Would you pick it up? Glance at it and keep browsing? Not see it at all? None of this really matters since A) the book isn't finished, B) isn't published because it's not finished, and C) if it ever is published, that won't be the title. But I'm still curious. :)

However, the winner of the contest only had 10 entries.
Now, without further ado, the winner of one shiny new hardback of Leviathan is...

Ghostgirl by Tonya Hurley
And if I should die before I awake,
I pray the popular attend my wake.
Charlotte Usher feels practically invisible at school, and then one day she really is invisible. Even worse: she's dead. And all because she choked on a gummy bear. But being dead doesn't stop Charlotte from wanting to be popular; it just makes her more creative about achieving her goal.
If you thought high school was a matter of life or death, wait till you see just how true that is. In this satirical, yet heartfelt novel, Hurley explores the invisibility we all feel at some times and the lengths we'll go to be seen."
I was really excited when I got this from the library; I'd been wanting to read it for a while. But I must admit, I was a little disappointed when I read it.
Ghostgirl was a little reminiscent of Lauren Myracle's Rhymes with Witches. Charlotte was a kind of pathetic protagonist obsessed with being popular and willing to do just about anything to be popular. It was annoying and made Charlotte very hard to like at times. Other times, I just felt extremely bad for Charlotte, particularly right after she died when half the students in her school used her memorial as an excuse to ditch school and didn't even bother to go.
I didn't really like any of the characters in this. They were all annoying in their own way. I couldn't relate to any of them, didn't wish any of them were real, and really, just didn't like reading about them. I can't think of a single one that was tolerable.
I thought this book was going to be kinda funny, but it wasn't, not really. Despite being rather long, it looked like a nice, funny, light read, which is not at all what it was.
The story for Ghostgirl was okay. I'd wanted it so long, I'd forgotten exactly what it was about by the time I got it.
I don't see how there's a sequel. Everything was pretty wrapped up by the end.
Ah, the end, where it stopped being even remotely good. There were so many things I didn't like about the end, I can't even begin to list them here. To avoid spoiling anything, I'll just say that the end was the most disappointing part.
I give Ghostgirl two and a half Fists of Rock (I don't actually have half a Fist of Rock, so I'll just put two).

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
"It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ fabricated animals as their weaponry. The Leviathan is a living airship, the most formidable airbeast in the skies of Europe.Aleksandar Ferdinand, prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn Stormwalker and a loyal crew of men.
Deryn Sharp is a commoner, a girl disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She's a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.
With the Great War brewing, Alek's and Deryn's paths cross in the most unexpected way - taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure. One that will change both their lives forever."
I can't decide who I liked more, Deryn or Alek. They were both great characters. Deryn was funny and cool, I found it amusing that she was the best midshipmen on the Leviathan when she wasn't supposed to be there since she was a girl. I wish there had been a few more instances where her secret was almost discovered. I feel like that part was downplayed a lot. It was a little confusing how in the chapters about Deryn it would be all "she" or her", but in the chapters about Alek with Deryn present (or Dylan, as he thought she was called) it was all "he" and "him", when it was the same person.
Alek wasn't really funny, which my favorite characters usually are, but he was still likable.
I'm really torn between which side I liked more. The Darwinists and the Clankers creations were both interesting. Early on, I thought I liked the Darwinists more, but then they got into a battle and the beasties started getting hurt and suddenly I didn't like them as much. The Clanker contraptions were equally interesting, and the parts where Alek tried something new with the Stormwalker, like running (when he almost tripped), were kinda funny. I guess you can't really choose which one's cooler, they both had their merits, and they both had flaws.
Now, I can't review Leviathan without talking about the illustrations. Keith Thompson did an amazing job with the artwork! The characters, Clanker machines, and Darwinist beasties all looked so great. One of my favorites, which I really wish had been in color, was "An Heirloom Saves the Heir". I won't tell you what it looks like, because A) it just wouldn't be the same as seeing it, and B) it might ruin the story.I also really liked the colored version of "Negotiations and Collateral" which was used for the UK cover and can be viewed on Keith's site.
Anyway, this book was amazing! I highly recommend it, especially if you've read Scott's other books. This one definitely ranks as one of my favorites, above Midnighters, So Yesterday, and Uglies. Seriously, read it.
I four Leviathan four Fists of Rock.

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
"Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police."I didn't really expect to like this book as much as I did. The cover almost made me put it back on the shelf at the library, and the story only slightly interested me. But I actually really enjoyed Among the Hidden. It was a nice, quick read that I finished in one day. The story was much more interesting than I thought it would be.
I can't really decide if it started out slow or not. I mean, in the beginning there wasn't much going on, but there was always the danger of Luke being found to keep things interesting, even though nothing like that happened until near the end of the book.
I found Jen to be a bit annoying. She was too naive. What she wanted was great and everything, but the way she planned to get it was, quite frankly, stupid. She was a little too entitled for her own good.
Luke was an okay character, not very interesting, but not horribly boring either. I felt really bad for him. I couldn't imagine being in his situation, not being allowed out of the house for months, not even allowed to go near the windows. It sounded like torture! It's amazing he didn't go insane.
I found Luke's easy friendship with Jen to be a bit unbelievable. I mean, she was the first person outside of his family that he'd ever met. But I guess what they had in common made it easier for them to become such good friends in such a short amount of time.
SPOILERS!!!
I really didn't expect what happened to Jen. It reminded me of Bridge to Terabithia. I was very shocked.
This book really surprised me. I thought it would be kind of boring and slow, but it wasn't. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the series.
I give Among the Hidden three Fists of Rock.
